Furthermore, although they grow best in acidic soils, they are better adapted to neutral soils and do not tolerate chalky soils.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In soils that are too acidic, a disease called &#8220;cabbage hernia&#8221; may develop, which causes a thickening of the roots and the plant does not develop properly.<\/p><h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00b7Climate<\/h3><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Broccoli, typical of Mediterranean areas, is a winter vegetable. It needs <strong>a certain amount of cold,<\/strong> so it is usually grown in autumn-winter. Its optimum development temperature is between 10 and 20<sup>o<\/sup>C.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is important that the time of inflorescence formation does not coincide with very hot months or with heavy frosts.<\/p><h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00b7Orientation on the plot<\/h3><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Farmers mostly plant broccoli in <strong>single rows<\/strong>. The distances and the number of plants depend on the broccoli variety and the size of the broccoli plants to be grown, as well as the environmental conditions.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In addition, it should be noted that when planting the seedlings in the soil, it is crucial to plant them at the same depth as they were in the seedbed.<\/p><h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>\u00bb<\/strong> <strong>Care requirements for broccoli<\/strong><\/span><\/h2><h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00b7Seedbed<\/h3><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Given the date of planting (spring or autumn, depending on the variety chosen), broccoli is initially sown in <strong>seedbeds for 45-55 days<\/strong>. Rocks and other unwanted materials are removed and ploughed. Furthermore, it should be noted that the most recommended pre-crops for broccoli are potatoes, onions, tomatoes, melons, maize, etc. and that rotations with other cruciferous vegetables such as radishes, cabbages, turnips, etc. should be avoided.<\/p><h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00b7Broccoli watering<\/h3><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In relation to water supply, broccoli requires constant humidity throughout its cycle. <strong>Watering<\/strong> should be <strong>frequent and abundant, without waterlogging the soil<\/strong>.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When the inflorescences are forming, it is not advisable to sprinkle water on them, as this could cause rot and fungus. In addition, the final size of the broccoli and the number of flower heads will be greatly influenced by the presence of this organic matter in the soil. It can be applied as:<\/p><ul style=\"text-align: justify;\"><li><strong>Bottom fertilisation:<\/strong> when we prepare the soil to receive the plants.<\/li><li>By <strong>padding<\/strong>around the stem.<\/li><\/ul><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">These plants also require doses of <strong>boron<\/strong> and in soils where <strong>magnesium<\/strong> is scarce, it is advisable to add this element. <\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If what we want is an <strong>organic broccoli crop<\/strong>, the fertilisers we will apply will be made up of organic matter only, such as manure, hummus, compost, etc.<\/p><h2> <\/h2><h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>\u00bb<\/strong> <strong>Broccoli harvesting<\/strong><\/span><\/h2><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Broccoli can generally be <strong>harvested 60-90 days after transplanting<\/strong>, depending on the variety.<\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This vegetable is harvested when the heads reach the size appropriate to their variety.
